Spring is in the air, and for many artists that means it’s time for us to renew our acquaintance with the outdoors. This simple list will remind you of the equipment that you’ll need to bring, as well as what to focus on while painting, in order to make painting "en plein air" a pleasure. What you will need for plein air painting: 1.Tubes of paint—ideally a limited palette: White, Raw Umber, Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Vermilion Red, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Orange, Viridian Green. 2. Several bristle brushes {(natural hairs) for oils,} several taklon brushes (synthetics hairs) & a palette knife, if desired. 3. Disposable palette paper pad. I’ll have some to provide if needed. 4. A portable, sturdy easel and folding chair if desired. I carry all my ‘stuff’ in a garden wagon. 5. Canvases or paper to paint on --no larger than a 9 x 12….But, I’ll bring some canvas panels for everyone who paints in oils or acrylic! 6. I’ll provide the OMS which is Odorless Mineral Spirits, to clean and thin oils. 7. Lots of paper towels and several small plastic trash bags (to tie up tightly to dispose of paper towels and palette paper, which I will take to dispose of them properly.) 8. Artist wipes ( package of non-scented baby wipes) to clean up after yourself 9. Small sketch book and pencil. 10. Wide hat, sunscreen, and bug repellant 11. Lots of water to drink and to use for water based paints.
