Public Art

Throughout the city of St. Clair, “Public Art” is becoming a common household phrase.  Through the direction of the St. Clair Art Association’s Public Art Committee, our community has created great momentum in creating a unique sense of place through the Arts.  Just take a look around and you’re sure to see the impact that Art has madeSkate Park in the form of unique, hand-painted street banners, creative bike racks, a GIANT community mosaic fish sculpture, traditional sculptures, archways, informative ceramic plaques, murals, and more!

Many of SCAA’s public art projects have provided opportunities for individuals, businesses, and organizations to collaborate and develop a stronger sense of community.  Each project has been developed, created, and shared by individuals of all ages.  Projects create unique opportunities to utilize our community’s wealth of talent, skills, and resources.

Currently in the brainstorming phase are two projects; artwork, including a water feature, for the Riverview Plaza Courtyard renovation and an ambitious community project that would create “Art Pods” along a stretch of the Bridge to Bay trail in neighboring China Township.  Each “Art Pod” would contain benches, trash cans, bike racks, and interactive sculptures; providing areas to pause, rest, and reflect while utilizing this busy recreational pathway.  This project will recruit local artists of all ages to design pods leading to collaboration with artists in the creation and installation of each work.

The SCAA Public Art Committee will host a community forums to gather input and ideas for the Courtyard and “Art Pod” projects as well as concepts for future public art projects.  Our goal is to provide opportunities to empower our community’s creative and SC Libraryinnovative spirit, while creating a sense of place like no other.  Our already beautiful community will continue to blossom through the Arts and civic partnerships.  ART FOR ALL!

Download a copy of the Art on the River Walking Tour brochure.  It lists the locations of 25 works of art around the city of St. Clair, including some of the Public Art Committee projects identified above.  Click for the front of the brochure and back of the brochure.

The Public Art Committee was formed in 2009.  Public art projects have been possible through funding provided by the Downtown Development Authority, the St. Clair Foundation, the Community Foundation of St. Clair County, St. Clair County Parks & Recreation, local businesses and individuals, and through the sale of prints from our Seasons in St. Clair project, Street Banner T-shirts, totes, bookmarks and cards at the Art Center.
